What comes inside a standard porta potty?
A standard porta potty from Brian Rental Works has 5 things inside: a toilet seat over a 60-gallon tank, a urinal, a toilet paper holder, a hand sanitizer dispenser and a roof vent. The door locks and shows “occupied.” The standard unit has no flush and no sink, so it needs no water or power.

Will a standard porta potty fit through my side gate?
A standard porta potty is about 44 inches wide, so it needs a gate with about 48 inches of clear opening. The unit is 91 inches tall and weighs 150–175 pounds empty. The driver can roll the standard unit about 15 feet from the truck on a dolly to a flat spot.
- Measure the gateMeasure post to post, not the gate panel. You need about 48 inches clear.
- Check overheadLow branches and carport roofs must clear about 8 feet.
- Pick flat groundGrass, gravel, dirt or concrete is fine if it is level. Avoid soft mud after rain.
- Mark the spotUse a cone, stake, ribbon or chalk X. Nobody needs to be home.
Where should I place a porta potty at a party or job site?
Place a standard porta potty on level ground within about 15 feet of where our truck can park. Keep the door facing away from the main seating area. On a job site, keep the unit near the work but out of the path of equipment. Leave room for the service truck to reach the unit weekly.

How many people can use one standard porta potty?
One standard porta potty serves about 50 guests at an event of 4 hours or less. For crews, 1 standard unit with weekly service handles about 10 workers on a 40-hour week. OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51 allows 1 toilet for 20 or fewer workers, but a crew of 15 fills the 60-gallon tank fast.
| Who is using it | Standard units | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 50 guests, up to 4 hours | 1 | Our dispatch rule: 1 unit per 50 guests |
| 100 guests, 4 hours | 2 | Add 1 unit for every 4 if alcohol is served |
| 100 guests, 8 hours | 4 | Longer events multiply: ×1.5 to 6 hrs, ×2 to 8 hrs |
| Crew of 10, 40-hour week | 1 | Weekly service included |
| Crew of 11–20 | 1–2 | OSHA allows 1 for 20 or fewer; we suggest 2, or 2 services a week |
| Crew over 10, June–September | Add a 2nd weekly service | Edinburg highs average 99.9–101.3°F |
Our sizing comes from our own dispatch rule and the OSHA 1926.51 sanitation rule. Run your numbers in the porta potty calculator.
How often is a standard porta potty serviced?
A standard porta potty on a construction or long-term rental gets 1 service visit per week, included in the 28-day rate. Each visit has 4 parts: pump the tank, clean and sanitize, deodorize, and restock paper and sanitizer. From June to September, crews over 10 should add a second weekly visit.

Event units arrive clean and stocked and usually need no service for a 1–3 day rental. Multi-day festivals can add mid-event visits. See long-term porta potty rentals for 28-day billing details.
Is a standard porta potty the right choice for my event?
A standard porta potty is the right choice for job sites, birthday parties, church picnics and sports events where cost matters most. Standard units are not ideal when guests expect a sink. For weddings, a deluxe unit or a handwashing station next to 2 standard units gives guests a place to wash.
| Situation | Standard unit? | Better option |
|---|---|---|
| Construction or remodel | Yes | — |
| Backyard birthday | Yes | Add a handwash station if food is served |
| Wedding or quinceañera | Works | Deluxe flushing unit |
| Guests using wheelchairs or walkers | No | Wheelchair-accessible unit |
| Food served | With a station | Handwashing station |
