How many porta potties does OSHA require on a construction site?
OSHA rule 29 CFR 1926.51(c), Table D-1, requires 1 toilet for 20 or fewer workers. A jobsite with 20 to 199 workers needs 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers. A jobsite with 200 or more workers needs 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 50 workers. Those numbers are the minimum.
| Workers on the jobsite | OSHA minimum (Table D-1) | What we usually set |
|---|---|---|
| 1–10 | 1 toilet | 1 standard unit, serviced weekly |
| 11–20 | 1 toilet | 2 units, or 1 unit with twice-weekly service |
| 21–40 | 1 toilet seat + 1 urinal per 40 workers | 3–4 units, serviced weekly |
| 41–199 | 1 toilet seat + 1 urinal per 40 workers | 1 unit per ~10 workers on a 40-hour week |
| 200+ | 1 toilet seat + 1 urinal per 50 workers | Planned site by site with your superintendent |
Read the rule itself at OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51, Sanitation. The minimum is not the same as comfortable. In our experience, 1 standard construction porta potty serviced weekly handles about 10 workers on a 40-hour week.
Above 10 workers, add a unit or a second weekly service. Our OSHA jobsite toilet guide walks through the counts. Questions about your specific site? Confirm with your safety officer or general contractor.
Do construction workers need a handwashing station on site?
OSHA rule 29 CFR 1926.51(f) requires washing facilities when crews work with paints, coatings, herbicides, insecticides or other harmful contaminants. Those facilities need water, soap and towels. Brian Rental Works rents 2-sided, foot-pump handwashing stations that let 2 people wash at once and are refilled on every weekly service.
Many Edinburg general contractors add 1 handwashing station on every jobsite, even when the rule does not strictly require one. Crews eat lunch on site, and hand sanitizer alone does not remove dirt or concrete dust.
A deluxe flushing unit has a sink inside and can stand in for a separate station on small crews.
How often are construction porta potties serviced?
Construction porta potties from Brian Rental Works get 1 service visit every week, included in the 28-day rate. In June through September, Edinburg highs average 99.9–101.3°F. For crews over 10 workers in those months, we recommend twice-weekly service to keep odor and tank levels under control.
- PumpThe vacuum truck empties the waste tank. Waste is hauled by our TCEQ-registered transporter trucks to an authorized disposal facility.
- Clean and sanitizeSeat, urinal, walls, floor and door handle are scrubbed and sanitized.
- DeodorizeFresh blue chemical goes back into the tank to control odor in the heat.
- RestockToilet paper and hand sanitizer are refilled. Handwashing stations get water, soap and towels.
- CheckThe door latch, vent and level are checked. A damaged unit is swapped on the spot.
Need an extra visit before an inspection or a big pour? Call and we add one.
How does 28-day billing work for jobsite toilets?
Construction porta potties are billed in 28-day cycles, not calendar months. The first cycle starts on delivery day. Each cycle includes the unit and 1 weekly service. Cycles renew automatically until you call for pickup, and you should call 2 business days before you want the unit gone. Delivery is usually quoted once.
A 28-day cycle means a 31-day month never costs more. See the monthly porta potty rental page for a worked example with real dates and pickup notice.

Where should a porta potty go on a construction site?
Place a construction porta potty on flat, firm ground within about 15 feet of where our truck can park. Keep the unit off the driveway path of concrete trucks, out of low spots that flood, and away from trenches and overhead work. The door should face the work area, not the street.
- Flat and firm: a level pad keeps the tank from leaking and the door from swinging shut.
- Truck access: our service truck needs to reach the unit every week. Blocked units cannot be pumped.
- Not under the roofline: keep units clear of roofing tear-off and anything that can fall.
- Mark the spot: a cone, stake or chalk X lets us drop the unit with nobody on site.
- Moving lots: builders moving from lot to lot can call to have units moved.

Which construction jobs rent porta potties in Edinburg?
About 26% of the rental calls we reviewed came from construction and remodel jobs. Edinburg approved 32 new subdivisions with 867 lots in 2025, with about 407 million dollars in construction underway across 2025–26. That work brings new home builders, roofers, remodelers, concrete crews and commercial contractors who all need jobsite toilets.
New home builds
Lot-by-lot units for framers, plumbers and finish crews in new subdivisions. Moves from lot to lot as the build moves.
Roofing jobs
Short jobs of a few days. We drop a unit in the driveway or by the curb and pull the unit when the dumpster leaves.
Remodels
Kitchen and bathroom remodels where crews cannot use the house bathroom. One unit in the driveway is usually enough.

Can contractors open an account with PO and net terms?
Yes. Brian Rental Works opens commercial accounts with purchase orders and net terms after approval. We send a W-9 and a certificate of insurance on request. We take Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express and debit. Tax-exempt organizations should send their certificate before the first invoice.
One account can cover many jobsites. Each invoice shows the jobsite address, the unit count, the cycle dates and the service visits, so your office can match them to the job.
Read our rental terms for damage and cancellation rules. Normal wear is on us; vandalism, fire and tipping by others are billed at repair cost.
