Edinburg averages 99.9°F in June, 100.9°F in July and 101.3°F in August. A plastic porta potty sitting in that sun all afternoon gets hot inside, and heat speeds up odor. Here is what we do on our own routes, and what you can do on your site, to keep units usable all summer.
Why does a porta potty smell worse in 100°F heat?
A porta potty smells worse in 100°F heat because warm waste breaks down faster and the deodorizer in the tank works harder. The cabin also traps hot air. A unit that seems fine in March can turn rough by Thursday in August if 15 people share it and service comes once a week.
The fix is not more air freshener. The fix is fewer uses between pumpings, a cooler spot and air that moves. Those three things matter more than the brand of chemical.
How often should a porta potty be serviced in an Edinburg summer?
From June through September, we recommend twice-weekly service for any crew over 10 people in Edinburg. One standard unit serviced weekly handles about 10 workers on a 40-hour week. Above that, add a second unit or a second weekly visit. Each visit pumps, cleans, deodorizes and restocks the unit.
| Crew size (40-hr week) | June–September plan | October–May plan |
|---|---|---|
| 1–10 workers | 1 unit, weekly service | 1 unit, weekly service |
| 11–20 workers | 2 units weekly, or 1 unit twice weekly | 2 units, weekly service |
| 21–40 workers | 3–4 units, twice-weekly service | 3–4 units, weekly service |
| 41+ workers | Call — we plan by layout | Call — we plan by layout |
OSHA’s minimum is in 29 CFR 1926.51: 1 toilet for 20 or fewer workers. The minimum is legal. It is not comfortable in August. See our OSHA jobsite toilet guide for the full table.
Where should I place a porta potty to keep it cooler?
Place a porta potty in afternoon shade, ideally on the east side of a building or wall, at least 10 feet from where people eat or rest. The west sun from 2 PM to 7 PM heats the cabin most. Keep the vent on the roof clear of branches, tarps and stacked material.
- Use building shadeThe east or north side of a house frame or trailer gets shade in the hot afternoon.
- Avoid dark pavementAsphalt holds heat. A dirt or grass pad is cooler than blacktop.
- Leave the door side openDo not tuck the door against a wall. Moving air through the door and vent helps.
- Stay reachableKeep a clear path for the service truck, within about 15 feet of where it can park.

Running a crew through the summer?
Call and tell us your crew size. We set the units and service days so the toilets stay usable through August.
What else keeps a porta potty usable in summer heat?
3 small habits keep a summer porta potty usable: shut the door after every use, keep trash out of the tank, and report a full or tipped unit the same day. Trash like bottles and gloves fills the tank fast. A closed door keeps flies out and keeps the deodorizer working.
- Put a trash can next to the unit, not inside it.
- Add a handwashing station for crews that eat on site.
- Ask for a hasp if people outside the crew use the unit at night.
- Call us if the toilet paper runs out before service day. We can add a visit.
Should event renters worry about heat too?
Yes. A summer event porta potty gets heavy use in a short window, so count units carefully. Plan 1 standard unit per 50 guests for up to 4 hours, and multiply by 1.5 for events up to 6 hours. Outdoor summer events usually run long, and guests drink more water.
For weddings and big parties in July, a restroom trailer with A/C is the most comfortable choice. It needs 120V power and a garden hose. For a quick count, use how many porta potties you need.
